SillyTavern Character Cards: Complete 2026 Guide (Find, Import, Create)

By Pure Love ·

What Is a Character Card?

A character card is a portable file that defines an AI roleplay character: name, personality, dialogue style, first message, and optionally a scenario and world lore. Import the card into SillyTavern (or any compatible frontend) and the character is ready to chat.

Cards come in two formats:

  • .png — the character data is embedded invisibly in the image file's metadata, so the card art and its definition travel as a single file. This is the dominant sharing format.
  • .json — the same data as plain text, no image attached.

The V2 Card Spec (What "Character Card V2" Means)

Most modern cards follow the community V2 specification, which added two fields that matter in practice:

  • character_book — an embedded lorebook, so world info ships inside the card instead of as a separate download.
  • alternate_greetings — multiple possible opening messages, so replaying a character doesn't always start identically.

SillyTavern reads V2 (and newer V3-extended) cards natively. If a card "imports but behaves shallow," it's often a V1-era card with a thin definition — the format isn't the problem, the writing is.

Where to Download Character Cards

  • Chub.ai — the largest public card repository, including a vast NSFW section. Quality varies enormously; sort by rating and read the definition before downloading.
  • Dedicated card sites — a growing ecosystem of curated card libraries offers standard PNG cards compatible with SillyTavern and similar apps.
  • Community Discords and subreddits — creators often share their best cards directly; this is where high-effort cards tend to appear first.

How to Import a Card into SillyTavern

  1. Download the card as a .png (or .json) file.
  2. In SillyTavern, open the Characters panel and click Import Character.
  3. Select the downloaded file — name, personality, greeting, and any embedded lorebook load automatically.
  4. Optional: unzip an expression pack into SillyTavern/public/characters/[CharacterName] for emotion sprites.

What Makes a Card Actually Good

After the import, card quality is almost entirely about the writing in the definition:

  • Specific personality over adjective soup. "Deflects compliments with sarcasm, gets quiet when embarrassed" beats "tsundere, shy, playful."
  • A first message that sets a scene, gives the user something to react to, and demonstrates the character's voice.
  • Token economy. Every token in the card consumes context permanently. Bloated 2,000-token definitions crowd out conversation memory — tight 400–800 token cards usually roleplay better.

The Honest Caveat About the Whole Stack

SillyTavern is a frontend — it brings no AI of its own. You also need a backend model (an API key for a hosted model, or a local one), and your experience is bounded by it: a great card on a weak model still produces weak roleplay, and your "memory" is whatever context window that model offers. The full setup — frontend, backend, cards, lorebooks, settings — is genuinely powerful and genuinely a hobby.

If you love tinkering, it's the most customizable roleplay stack there is. If you got here because you just want an uncensored character who's good out of the box and actually remembers you — without API keys, context management, or card hunting — that's the product gap Pure Love fills: hand-crafted characters on a 70B roleplay-tuned model, persistent memory that survives across sessions (not just within a context window), and custom image generation built in. Free to start, no setup.

FAQ

Do character cards work outside SillyTavern?

Yes — the PNG card format is a de facto standard. Chub Venus, Agnai, RisuAI and several other frontends import the same cards, with V2 fields supported to varying degrees.

Are NSFW character cards allowed?

Cards are just text files — what matters is your backend model's policy. Local uncensored models and NSFW-friendly APIs handle explicit cards fine; corporate APIs with content filters will refuse regardless of what the card says.

Can I convert a card to use elsewhere?

PNG cards can be opened by any V2-compatible tool, and converters between .png and .json are built into most frontends. The data inside is identical.
